DESCRIPTION

The Athlon Rangecraft Velocity PRO Radar Chronograph is a compact Doppler-radar chronograph designed to accurately measure projectile velocity without attaching equipment to the firearm or barrel.

Position the unit beside the muzzle, align it towards the target and begin shooting. Because it does not contact the barrel, it will not alter the firearm’s zero or interfere with barrel harmonics. Its radar-based operation also eliminates the optical screens and downrange equipment required by many traditional chronographs.

The Velocity PRO measures speeds from 65 to 5,000 feet per second with a published accuracy of ±0.1%, making it suitable for centrefire and rimfire rifles, pistols, airguns and archery equipment. It does not rely on muzzle blast for activation, allowing it to capture projectiles from firearms fitted with muzzle brakes, compensators and other muzzle devices.

Shot information is displayed on the large 2.4-inch transreflective LCD screen. Users can review individual shots and cycle through useful statistics including average velocity, minimum and maximum velocity, standard deviation, extreme spread and deviation from average. When projectile weight is entered, the unit can also calculate kinetic energy and power factor.

The rechargeable internal lithium-ion battery provides approximately six hours of operation and charges through USB-C. Built-in memory stores up to 50 sessions with as many as 100 shots per session.

Bluetooth connectivity allows recorded information to be synced with the Athlon Ballistics app. Depending on the current app and firmware version, users can manage sessions, add notes, identify cold- or clean-bore shots, exclude selected readings, associate data with ballistic profiles, compare sessions and export information.

What does a radar chronograph measure?

A radar chronograph measures the velocity of a projectile. Accurate velocity information can be used to assess ammunition consistency, develop handloads and create more reliable ballistic calculations.

What velocity range can the Velocity PRO measure?

It measures projectile speeds from 65 to 5,000 fps, equivalent to approximately 19.8 to 1,524 metres per second.

How accurate is the Athlon Velocity PRO?

Athlon publishes a velocity accuracy specification of ±0.1% when the chronograph is correctly positioned and operated.

Does the chronograph attach to the rifle?

No. The Velocity PRO is positioned beside the firearm rather than attached to its barrel. This prevents it from changing the firearm’s zero or affecting barrel harmonics.

Where should the chronograph be positioned?

Athlon instructs users to position it approximately 4–10 inches, or 10–25cm, beside the muzzle or bow riser. It should be aligned in the same direction as the target. Extra clearance may be required around firearms producing substantial muzzle blast.

Does it require special lighting conditions?

No. Doppler radar does not depend on sunlight or artificial lighting in the way that an optical chronograph does.

Will it work with a muzzle brake or compensator?

Yes. The Velocity PRO does not rely on muzzle blast for its trigger, so it can capture projectiles from firearms fitted with muzzle brakes, compensators and other muzzle devices. Position it carefully to protect the unit from excessive blast.

Can it be used with suppressed firearms?

Yes, where suppressor use is lawful. Because the radar tracks the projectile rather than relying on muzzle noise, reduced muzzle blast does not prevent normal operation.

Can it measure rimfire ammunition?

Yes. Its velocity range covers common rimfire cartridges, including subsonic and high-velocity .22 LR ammunition.

Can it measure airgun pellets and arrows?

Yes. The available session types support airguns and archery equipment, provided the projectile falls within the supported velocity range and the unit is correctly positioned.

What shooting statistics does it calculate?

The unit displays individual velocity readings, average velocity, minimum and maximum velocity, standard deviation, extreme spread and deviation from average. It can also calculate kinetic energy and power factor when projectile weight is entered.

What is extreme spread?

Extreme spread is the difference between the fastest and slowest shots in a recorded session. A smaller extreme spread generally indicates more consistent ammunition velocity.

What is standard deviation?

Standard deviation shows how closely the recorded velocities are grouped around the session average. It is commonly used by handloaders and precision shooters to evaluate load consistency.

Is a phone required to use the chronograph?

No. The chronograph has its own screen, controls and internal session memory. The Athlon Ballistics app provides additional data-management, comparison and export functions but is not required for basic velocity measurement.

How much information can it store?

The internal memory can hold up to 50 sessions, with as many as 100 recorded shots in each session.

How long does the battery last?

Athlon specifies approximately six hours of operation from the rechargeable internal lithium-ion battery.

How is the battery charged?
